The Department of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering was established in 2020 on the basis of combining the advantages of fundamental biochemistry and molecular biology principles with the rapidly progressing field of bioactive materials. The department’s research direction focuses on the advancement of interdisciplinary and cross-innovative bioactive material research areas, such as tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, nanomaterials, molecular imaging, biosensing, bioseparation, and stem cell biology. The department features the Key Laboratory of Bioactive Materials of the Ministry of Education with a faculty of 13 full professors, 2 associate professors, 2 lecturers, and 2 administrators. Among them are 4 chief scientists from 973 Project/National Key R&D Programs, 3 winners of the National Outstanding “Jiéchū/Prominence” Youth Fund, and 3 winners of the National Outstanding “Yōuxiù/Excellence” Youth Fund. The team led by Professor Deling Kong has achieved prestigious awards, including the 2019 National Science Foundation of China Innovation Research Group, the 2013 Ministry of Education Innovation Team in Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering, and the honorary title of Advanced Organization of the National Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese awarded in 2018. Professor Deling Kong achieved the 2019 Tianjin Natural Science First Prize Award, and Professor Zhimou Yang was selected as the 2014 Young Technology Innovation Leaders in Tianjin and achieved the 2014 Tianjin Natural Science First Prize Award.

The department offers Bioscience and Biotechnology as its two undergraduate majors. Modules on Biomedical Materials, Tissue Engineering of Artificial Organs, Nano-biomaterials, Adsorption and Separation Materials, and Biosensing and Detection are offered to graduate students pursuing masters and doctoral degrees. The department prides itself on its teaching and research capabilities. The department has published over 10 teaching and research papers on the reform of education and teaching techniques; has undertaken multiple teaching and research projects in Tianjin schools; and supports the training of its talents in teaching activities. In terms of scientific research and impact, the department has undertaken national and provincial research projects such as the National Funding Commission's Innovative Research Group Award, National Key R&D Programs, National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, and at a general level has achieved a large number of technology patents and important academic research results published in influential scientific journals. Research in blood purification and adsorption resins have been successfully transformed into multiple products that have helped drive and develop the blood perfusion device industry, whilst realising significant socioeconomic benefits.
